Hyundai & Kia Engine Codes Explained
An engine code is the only reliable way to order an engine. Two vehicles of the same model and year can take different codes, and a code can carry early and late versions that are priced.
What you actually need to know
The letter and number pattern tells you something about the family. A code beginning with D is a diesel, so the D4CB and the D4HB are the two turbo-diesels we supply. Codes beginning with G are petrol, and the family follows: the Theta II codes such as G4KE, G4KG, G4KH and G4KJ, the Nu codes such as G4NA, G4NB and G4NC, and the Gamma codes such as G4FD and G4FJ.
The code is stamped on the engine block. If you cannot find it or cannot safely get to it, send your rego or VIN instead and we will identify it for you. That is what we would rather you did anyway, because we check it against the build rather than taking the model name at face value.
This matters commercially as well as mechanically. Ordering on the model name is how people end up with an engine that does not fit, and freight in both directions costs more than the five minutes it takes to confirm the code.
